This week's Bold Leaps guest is Juno nominated, Canadian Music Artist Boslen. Growing up in the bucolic farmland of Chilliwack BC, Corben Nikk Bowen did not have a traditional upbringing. Raised in Indigenous Hiza culture, he was brought up mostly by his single parent Indigenous mother, a stepfather, and has a Jamaican biological father whom he has not yet met. Joyous as a child, he cleared out his closet at 11 years old and started rapping pretending to be entertaining the crowds from his mother’s couch. By the time he was 13 he went by the name “Coffee Black.” But he also endured both internal and external struggles. Being one of the only kids of colour in his school he faced racial slurs and name calling and things were not good at home. It was ultimately rugby that lit his fire, his talent on the field resulted in a scholarship to UVIC. His dreams of being a professional athlete were set. Until he tore his ACL for the second time, and his dreams shattered. He made a deal with his higher power, “Take away Rugby, but give me music” As if it was divine intervention, the call was instantly answered and Boslen’s music career skyrocketed. In just a few years, he had a record label, millions of streams and downloads of his singles, albums were released, he headlined festivals and this year at 24 he received a Juno nomination.

And today’s  @boldleaps  guest is internationally acclaimed writer, Michelle Good. Impacted by the 60s Scoop, Michelle popped out of the foster system at 18 with no money, skills or support. She faced abandonment and perceived herself as deeply traumatized. And yet, there was a fearless force inside of her, a survivor who worked for Indigenous organizations for 25 years, and in her early 40s, she took herself to UBC to become a lawyer. While she was a practicing lawyer, advocating for survivors of residential schools, Michelle had burning desire to write a book, a dream she had had since she was a little girl, addressing the question, “Why won’t they get over it?" She was slowly writing the book for 9 years while practicing law until she got serious and went to the UBC Fine Arts program at 58. In 2021, at 64 she published her debut novel, Five Little Indians, which has been showered with accolades, awards, international recognition and television options. And she’s since written another passionate and essential book, Truth Telling, which is also meeting with international acclaim.

Dr Divi Chandna grew up in a strict immigrant family enforcing the importance of culture and education. She knew she and all her siblings would wind up being doctors. And sure enough by the time Divi was 28 she had it all. She was a GP, married to the man of her dreams, had security and comfort until she got sick. Really sick. So sick she had to make significant changes in her life. She decided to leave her profession, and her marriage, and begin the long, transformational journey of healing herself. She hit the yoga mat and started meditating. She began to decipher between the loud voices of her ego and the softer voices of her intuition. As she began to focus on the softer, more loving voices, she started to listen to its guidance. The voice of the intuition became so clear that it led her to become the Internationally acclaimed Author, Speaker and Intuitive Healer that she is now. In this episode of Bold Leaps Dr Divi teaches us how to listen to our inner guidance so that we can all take steps towards our dreams and live the life we are meant to live. Thanks for watching! It was such a delight to sit down with Shakespearean Actor and Artistic Director Christopher Gaze on Bold Leaps this week and talk about the risks he's taken to create his vision, a world wide Shakespearean Festival in Vancouver. The story is not without its ups and downs, starting from needing a loan of $35k, to building all aspects of the festival from scratch and even enduring the affects of COVID on the theatre scene in Vancouver. I loved hearing about his father's impact on him, his perceptions of failure, his thoughts on dreams and his incredible determination. #boldleaps #pursueyourdreams #donttakenoforananswer #believeinyourself
